Welcome to the SUMMER SMART START EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM!

We hope that you enjoyed a few days of rest and relaxation.  We have prepared a fun-filled summer for the students and teachers here at the George Summer Smart Start Extended Day.  In your binders you will find a curriculum calendar that outlines the theme of each week and the culminating event.

In an attempt to provide you with plenty of materials and ideas to maintain a highly engaged schedule for the children, we have provided you with information below to ease in the transition of locating materials.

·         Activity Bins: are located in the community room along the back wall.  Please Sign out the entire bin and return it as soon as your group has finished with it.  Please be sure to return it before the end of your shift on that day so other groups may use it as well.  Please make every attempt to return the bin in such a way that it is ready to use for the next group.  If materials need to be replenished, find a curriculum coordinator so they may provide you with materials.  Activities bins are as follows:

Fuse Beads
Jewelry/craft beads
Planting – Flowers/ Seeds
Paper Bag Puppets
Pretend Play
Scrapbooking
Woodsie Fun
Modeling Clay
Gimp
Sidewalk Chalk
Foam Fun
Candy Making (needs microwave)
Speed Stack Cup Race
Reader’s Theatre

·         Art Room:  This week, there is a planned art activity.  The necessary materials and directions are on the front desk in the art room.
Many materials have been placed in the art room for your use.  Many of the curriculum units have art activities within them; please feel free to complete them in the Art Room.  Remember the art room is a creative space, tap into your genius and begin designing.  If you plan an activity and need additional supplies, please give us ONE WEEK advance notice and we will do our best to get to AC MOORE.  You will find the supply request form on the www.summerxday.weebly.com website. There may be an activity planned for you, check the front table for materials.  Again, inform a curriculum coordinator if supplies are low.

·         Books, leveled:  Leveled books have been delivered to each room.  In addition, read aloud books chapter books, and book sets are available in the curriculum room.  These books are located on the left hand side of the room in bins.  Take what you find to be most useful and then return them when finished for others to enjoy. Please be sure to return them to the bin you borrowed from to help us maintain our inventory.  Again, there are sign out sheets.

·         Books, theme:  Next week, we will begin to set books out according to the theme of the week.  Please remember to sign them in and out.  Some of these books will be books borrowed from the GEORGE & HUNTINGTON SCHOOL Libraries.  It is important that we keep a close eye on these in that we may return them.

·         Vans: Dismissal begins around 4 pm and children will be called via Nextel as their driver arrives.  Please be sure your Nextel’s are working and van students have been identified.  If there is a question about a student, please send them down to the office before 4:00 so we may make appropriate contact to determine pickup.

·         TECHNOLOGY:  The classrooms have a Promethean Pen, Promethean pointer and projector remote control.  Please remember to turn projectors OFF when not in use.  Students should be engaged and interacting with activities on the website:

There is no password necessary.  On the homepage there is a great video on tally charts and bar graphs courtesy of Brain Pop (video changes each week).  Roll over the home tab for other options including CLAYMATION.  There is a video of the past projects completed by our very own Smart Starters.  Click on the Authors tab, STORYLINEONLINE.net is a great site where famous actors/actresses read their favorite children’s book aloud via video.  Please forward along any great websites to Marybeth to add to the website for all members of Smart Start to enjoy.

·         Summer Reading:  In your group binder, you will find information regarding Summer Reading.  There is a copy of the Summer Reading Program Pamphlet and a copy of the reading response form or the option blocks for your grade level.   The Summer Reading log sheets will be copied and will be in the attendance folders on Friday morning.  Additional copies are located in the community room! Attention all Groups:

Welcome to your first day of summer!!! You have been supplied with basic classroom items.  These items vary by grade level.  We will be sending up more supplies as we get them.  We do have more games and general supplies.  If you need anything please ask Ines Enos, MaryBeth O’Brien or Melissa Shephard.  Do not come down and take things from the stage or community room.  There are general art supplies in the Art Room you may use.  We will be setting things up for you to come down on a weekly basis to pick up curricula and books beginning next week.

This week is Getting to Know You Week.  We have delivered your craft items for this week to your classroom.
